The Portland Cement Association (PCA) recently released industry-wide Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for portland cement, portland-limestone cement, blended cement and masonry cement. Verified by ASTM International, the EPDs are registered summary reports of environmental impacts of material production based on life-cycle inventories.
The new IW-EPDs embody material, fuel and energy data from 19 PCA producer members. The results demonstrate a continued reduction in greenhouse gasses (GHGs) associated with producing cement and clinker in the United States. Compared to figures in the 2016 EPDs, portland cement GHGs decreased by 11.3%, blended cement GHGs decreased by 16.8%, and masonry cement GHGs decreased 14.9%. Additionally, this is the first time EPDs for portland-limestone cement could be developed showing a carbon footprint 8.2% lower than portland cement.
“PCA and its members are committed to sustainability and driving down the carbon intensity of our operations,” said PCA President and CEO Mike Ireland. “The development and reduction results of these EPDs show the industry’s progress towards our climate ambition of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.”
